Old Fashioned 069

I consider myself an avid Mad Men fan, but I had no idea that Don Draper’s favorite cocktail was an Old Fashioned. I could swear that he just guzzled from the copious amounts of liquor bottles stashed in every drawer and corner of his ad agency. But, it’s true. He’s an Old Fashioned guy.

And I never thought I’d be an Old Fashioned kind of gal. But, I am. Usually, I’ll just have my bourbon on the rocks with a twist, but I’ve been swayed once or twice. So, when I venture off the on-the-rocks trail, chances are pretty good that it’s going to be with an Old Fashioned cocktail.

A couple of years ago, I was with a group of wonderful friends at a restaurant where I had my first bacon-infused Old Fashioned. It was exquisite in its porkiness. And, from that evening on, I’ve been ordering Old Fashioned cocktails in restaurants and bars because it seems that no two bartenders use the same recipe. And I’ve been especially pleased when my Old Fashioned comes with a flavor twist. I’m not a stickler for the original cocktail, which combines bourbon, sugar, bitters and a lemon twist. I like my food and drink to go off the straight and narrow. And, so with that in mind, and several of the Old Fashioned cocktails I’ve been trying lately, I decided to spend the weekend perfecting my version of the Old Fashioned.
